Bernard Herrmann conducted the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra in the first performance of his "For the Fallen" in December 1943. It was his tribute to the war dead and towards the end he quoted a phrase from Handel's 'Messiah.' However, please note that this is from an acetate of the original broadcast so the sound is very ancient indeed and is uploaded here for purely 'historical' reasons!
