People with special educational needs or disabilities confront us with the need to adjust our philosophy of life, our idea of what it means to be human. Their needs frequently challenge our institutions and require us to act as the conscience of those institutions. Yet if we can do those things, there is much we can learn from the life experiences and ways of thinking of people different from ourselves.

After a Psychology degree and teaching certificate, Douglas Kidd started teaching in 1992. For the next 13 years he taught right through the primary age range and studied further, gaining a Masters in Education. In 2005 Douglas became the Headteacher of a primary school in the rural south of England. He moved to Hong Kong in 2011 taking up a role as an Educational Consultant focusing on his particular areas of interest in management systems, Special Needs and Gifted children, creativity and innovation, teacher training and the use of the outdoors and adventure learning in education. Douglas currently works with a group of primary schools and for an outdoor education company both based in Hong Kong.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
