Using a diamond stone and a piece of paper you can achieve a perfect set to your backsaw. Based on the method shown by Mike Wenzloff in a video by Christopher Schwarz in 2011. You can see the original video here,

His method is very sound and doesn't require stoning, but you do need a nice heavy duty vice with unmarred jaws to make it work well, my version is the street version if you will. 

Try to set your saw just a little bit heavy, being sure not to take the set close to the gullet or bottom of the tooth as it can tear the plate at that point. You don't want to stone your saw teeth very much as it can alter the principal of how the tooth is meant to function.
