From 2010 to 2018, Janine Brown has been exploring the social stigma of being a "wallflower" through the use of portraits created with a cardboard pinhole camera as well as other mediums.  Brown calls the body of work, "The Wallflower Project".  Using 35 mm film, Brown uses long exposures to capture her model and a wallpaper pattern that "speaks" to the model.  The entire image is created in-camera for the black and white portraits with an element of surprise and happy accidents as the pattern of the wallpaper falls in random area's of the model's face.  The resulting portraits take on a ghostly feeling as they fade into their wallpaper backgrounds beckoning to the viewer to spend time with them and contemplate the individual's existence.  A solo exhibition of "The Wallflower Project" has been shown at The Moorpark College Art Gallery (Moorpark, CA); Gallery 825  (Los Angeles, CA); and the Project Space at the Santa Monica Art Studios (Santa Monica, CA).  Work from the project has aslo been shown in numerous group shows across the United States and Paris, France.
