Press footage of various US presidential candidates, including Romney, Nixon, Humphrey, LeMay, Muskie and Agnew - all parties represented. Six items. Romney opens the campaigning in New Hampshire - press attend while he shakes hands and speaks with a middle-aged woman, then a man, Romney saying they have got to straighten out the mess that the country is in. A Romney meeting or rally, press. Three attractive Romney cheerleaders stand waiting. Romney gets ready to give a press conference. Romney, in his speech, invites Nixon to a series of New Hampshire debates in New Hampshire. Romney looks through papers with another man (a petition to be filed?). Romney speaks to another man. Romney supporters with placards. Romney with supporters. Romney helps a window cleaner clean a shop window - the mop end comes off and Romney, despite his smile, looks a pratt. New Hampshire, Wisconsin: Romney speaks about other candidates, addressing a small rally indoors (sound is barely audible, but it is probable he also talks about Vietnam), he is clapped. Supporters enter a building beside a sign reading 'Coffee with Nixon'. Nixon addresses an audience, school children clapping him as he finishes. Nixon mingles with supporters. A woman, probably Mrs. Nixon, and a serious-looking man watch. Nixon talks with a journalist, answering a question about what is most fun in politics - Nixon says he prefers meeting and talking to individual voters rather than doing speeches, and tries to be charming. Nebraska Primaries: Hubert Humphrey ascends the stage at a rally, shaking hands with important men and their wives. Addressing the rally, he declared that bold achievements have occurred only under Democrat leaders, calls for party unity. His audience, middle-class Americans sat at tables, Humphrey praises the presiding four years of Johnson's presidency. Robert F. Kennedy addresses the audience, talking about the Democratic way and about addressing problems. Press conference at Pittsburgh where LeMay (chosen by Wallace to be the third party's vice Presidential candidate) puts his foot in it regarding nuclear weapons - saying if he had a choice he would use nuclear rather than other weapons in conflict. Wallace and LeMay on platform. Wallace defending what LeMay has said, and pointing out that LeMay did not advocate the use of nuclear weapons. Muskie in interview criticises what LeMay has said and says LeMay has no business being within a 1000 miles of the presidency. Candidate Muskie addressing supporters, he tells a lame joke about who his mother will vote for - his audience, who are off-screen, laugh and clap, but the press behind him are unimpressed. Cut away to well to do people in the audience in evening wear. Muskie accepts a nomination. Surrounded by reporters outside somewhere, Muskie is asked how he would resolve Vietnam - he says he has answered it many times already and asks reporters to lower their mikes from his face - a clumsy politician. Addressing an audience at the New York Hilton, Muskie talks about ending the Vietnam war and says Nixon and Agnew have no plans how to do that. His audience, a dinner reception, give him a standing ovation at the end of his speech. Muskie, in black tie at another party reception, talks about the need for fully trained riot control forces. Muskie, on a stand in a black neighbourhood, responds in a patronising manner to a heckler. That heckler is given a chance at the mike, Muskie trying to calm the audience so the man can be heard. Maryland: Spiro Agnew at a press conference, talks about his becoming Vice-President elect, talks about the American system and his admiration for Senator Muskie who offered his congratulations earlier that day. Agnew continues, with his wife standing motionless beside him, talking about uniting the country under new leadership and vision.
