Remains of South Korean climbers who died in storm arrive home

(16 Oct 2018) The bodies of five South Korean climbers who died during a storm on a Nepal mountain arrived at Incheon Airport early on Wednesday. Four Nepalese guides were also killed when a storm swept the climbers' base camp on Gurja Himal mountain on Friday. Rescuers had retrieved the bodies of the nine climbers on Sunday after weather cleared. Among the dead was Kim Chang-ho, the first South Korean to summit all 14 Himalayan peaks over 8,000 meters without using supplemental oxygen. With nine fatalities, it was the deadliest climbing disaster in Nepal since 2015 when 19 people were killed at Mount Everest base camp by an avalanche triggered by an earthquake that devastated the country. Upon arrival at the air freight terminal of the Incheon Airport on Wednesday, alpine association officials and colleagues carried the coffins out of the terminal and loaded them into vehicles. Several bereaved family members were present as the deceased were carried through the airport freight terminal. The alpine associations to which the deceased climbers belonged were set to hold a joint funeral ceremony on Friday.
