When reading a new chart for the first time, try to ‘hear’ the rhythms and melodies internally; this will give you a clue as to the flow of the piece, and a feel for the bigger picture. 2. Look for the highest and lowest note of the chart; this will help you choose the best region of the fingerboard to play it in. 3. Be disciplined. Learn and play one thing at a time. In a good practice session, you should mix the fun stuff with things you find harder. 4. Practise regularly. 1 hour a day for 7 days is better than 7 hours once a week. 5. Practise slooooowly. The irony is that the slower you’re willing to practise a certain segment, the faster you’ll probably be able to master it. Practising too fast doesn’t give your brain enough time to take things in, and allows bad habits (wrong notes, poor rhythm, unwanted strings ringing) to become engrained in your playing. Being good at reading is really about believing you can do it, and the more time spent actually getting it right, the more your ‘reading confidence’ will flourish. So don’t keep reading things too fast, that way you are just re-confirming your own belief that you can’t do it properly! 6. Get a metronome. Not only will it help you develop that all-important sense of rhythm, it’s also a great way to track your progress, and a useful tool for helping you boost your playing speed. 7. Transpose a lot. Try moving some of the pieces and exercises in this book around a selection of keys. 8. Consider getting a teacher—one who will make you practise, set you meaningful goals to meet, is knowledgeable and experienced enough to assist you with the things you can’t work out for yourself, and can help open up the doors to the kingdom of music theory to you.
