ams has created the AS3935 Franklin Lightning sensor, capable of detecting lightning up to 40 kilometers away. With the ability to estimate the distance to the storm down to approximately 1 kilometer, detect both cloud to ground and cloud to cloud flashes, as well as being able reject interference signals from man-made sources, the AS3935 increases awareness and helps with safety decision making for both personal safety and equipment protection. SPI and I2C are both available to both control the AS3935 and receive data. In a small 4 millimeter by 3 millimeter package and using a low supply voltage between 2.4 and 5.5 volts, the AS3935 is perfect for a large variety of indoor and outdoor applications. http://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ams/as3935-franklin-lightning-sensor
