Greetings citizens of The Bahamas! While newspaper headlines speak of a crackdown on crime in The Bahamas, there is another crackdown taking place that Bahamians need to pay close attention to. The Attorney General of The Bahamas has been quoted on the public record stating that Senators and Parliamentary Secretaries who vote against the proposed budget bill should resign. It is important to note that this is the very same budget that was designed by a select chosen few, with no opportunity for recommendations from key leaders in the private sector or even the collective body of FNM Members of Parliament. So, what is happening here exactly? The present administration is flexing their political muscle and openly letting its Senators and Members of Parliament know that they are expected to approve the budget measures unconditionally or face political repercussions. The Manual of Cabinet and Ministry procedures does highlight an expectation of compliance with government, as opposition in a budget vote often is considered to be a vote of “no confidence” in the administration. However, this hardline approach forces those Senators and Members of Parliament to disregard the voices of the very Bahamian citizens that they have been appointed to represent and serve. Bahamian citizens across the land have expressed outrage with the proposed 60% VAT tax hike, but the FNM administration appears intent on passing this budget with no amendments, or opposition for that matter. Are we certain that is the people’s time? With these ongoing developments regarding this budget, it only seems as if it is the people’s time to be ignored.
