ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The ambush and attack on police officers in New York last week has some here in the mountains worried about the safety of police officers. Local police agencies say they're not adding any extra precautions for officers in the wake of the attacks, but they say they are reminding them to be vigilant and pay close attention to their surroundings. Ricky Haralson says she's a former law enforcement officer and feels cops haven't been getting enough respect. "Officers already had a target on their backs and now they have an even bigger one," Haralson said. So far this year, 49 officers have been killed in firearm related incidents. Asheville Police Lt. Mike Yelton says officer attacks are nothing new. "[Our officers] are also very aware how important it is to stay approachable, stay engaged with the community because the vast majority of the folks we deal with are average every day citizens that come to us for some type of assistance," Lt. Yelton said. Despite recent events, Lt. Yelton says officers won't stop keeping their oath to protect and serve their communities. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/News13/ WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WLOS_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: https://instagram.com/wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Channel/?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to AnchorMOMS, the Podcast: https://wlos.com/news/anchormoms/anchormoms-the-podcast Watch more top local news stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk8Ge6UXHJs&list=PLkVbaoT-aYbIvnEpR0Ct5QQQqYaORUSUH For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.wlos.com Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://wlos.com/watch Have a news tip?
