A South African company raced a pigeon against their internet provider to see who could transfer data faster. The pigeon won.

At the time, Telkom was South Africa's leading internet provider. Annoyed with its slow speeds, Unlimited IT decided to race their homing pigeon against Telkom's internet.

It took an hour and eight minutes for the pigeon to fly the distance, and another hour was spent on the download and upload of the data.

This wasn't the first time pigeons were used to send internet packets however. In April 2001, the Bergen Linux group sent 9 packets using 9 pigeons over a distance of 5 km (3 miles). 4 of the pigeons were able to successfully send their data.
