A new study shows how animals use their tails to keep mosquitoes at bay. Georgia Tech researchers, including Marguerite E. Mathern, Kasey Cockerill, Yijang Zhou, Mihir Bellamkonda and David L. Hu, discovered that large animals swish the tips of their tails to keep away most of the insects – then swat the ones that get through. The work could help engineers discover new ways to build machines that could protect humans and animals from mosquitoes.
