New York prison break: female prison worker questioned as possible accomplice

Police have questioned a woman who works at the New York maximum-security prison where two convicted murderers pulled off an elaborate escape from the facility between Friday night and Saturday morning.The employee is being questioned as a possible accomplice. She reportedly worked with the escapees and knows the two “very well”, CNN reported.“They wouldn't have had the equipment on their own, that's for sure,” CNN quoted New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as saying. 

During their escape, the two convicted murderers, Richard Matt and David Sweat, cut holes through the ¼ inch thick steel plate wall behind their beds in their side-by-side cells and climbed out, according to the LA Times reported.Then, from a catwalk about six stories high, the duo climbed down through a network of pipes before breaking through a double-brick wall. 

At one point, the two then cut open a 24-inch steel steam pipe and climbed inside, travelling through the pipe for a “fairly significant distance” before cutting their way out of the pipe on the other end. The two ended up at a secured manhole cover located outside the prison on Bouck Street and Flag Street. They then cut through a steel lock and chain from the inside the manhole before escaping to street level, according to the LA Times.

Richard Matt and David Sweat remain at large despite a manhunt involving 250 officers. Their escape is the first in Clinton Correctional Facility’s 150-year history.
