Former Long Island volunteer firefighter Don Prince founded a Delray Beach treatment center where Steven Shapiro worked. After Delray Beach police arrested Shapiro in April 2018 on charges of credit card fraud, people who knew him came forward to say he had claimed to have been a Connecticut firefighter who was at Ground Zero the day of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. They say he wasn’t there and wasn’t a firefighter.
