THE SPIN ROOM | According to an exposé in the New York Times, lobbying and public relations firms on K-Street have been extremely active since Donald Trump became president. This is particularly as they are courted by companies and individuals abroad that the Trump administration has targeted with sanctions. How is Trump courted and what are the legal risks that it entails — including jail time? New York Times reporter Kenneth Vogel, and expert on sanctions law and founder & principal at Ferrari & Associates Erich Ferrari analyze.

Story:

One of the main players mentioned in the Times story is an Israeli company called MER Security and Communication Systems.

According to the report, MER was paid $8 million by the Democratic Republic of Congo to lobby against the levying of additional sanctions. They included $500,000 to Alston & Bird, a Firm of Former Senator Bob Dole; $360,000 to Adnan Jalil, former congressional liaison to Trump's presidential campaign; $250,000 to the firm of Nancye Miller, the wife of former CIA Director, James Woolsey;$1.25 million to a firm owned by Robert Stryk who worked with Trump campaign officials, to organize meetings for President Joseph Kabila's special envoy to the U.S.; and more.

i24EWS reached out to MER for a comment on their lobbying for Kabila, but they refused due to client confidentiality.
