China in the early 1970's.  A view of misty mountains with trees growing on them in the south west of the country in Yunnan Province in the south; the camera pans down to show us a primitive boat with a single mast, sailing on the lake.  This is Kun-ming Lake, in the far south-west .  Peasants push the boat along with poles .  More boats sail past.
A seagull flies overhead.  Now another simple boat is shown, this one with a parallelogram shaped sail and a long rudder; this boat too is pushed with a pole.  Another boat, this one very long and shallow, with three tall and brilliantly white sails.  There is a wider view across the water to show a number of these boats; it is an amazing image.
A village commune in Yunnan Province.  A peasant woman with a hat tied under her chin is pushing a long-handled wooden barrow laden with earth.  A large group of peasants uses picks, spades and barrows to dig away at the earth on a hillside.  There are more shots of them working, again against a sheer cliff face.  Barrows are tipped into mine carts filled with earth, which are then pushed and pulled along rails which go on for miles, past fields and the lake.   The carts pull alongside a pile of earth; the peasants jump off the cart and tip the earth onto the pile.  Other peasants busily shovel the earth deposited.
