(8 May 1985) SP13058507 JAPAN BOXING WBA Superflyweight Jiro Watanabe defeats Julio Soto final round. Jiro Watanabe of Japan defended his WBC superflyweight title in Tokyo on Thursday (9/5), beating Julio Soto Solano of the Dominican Republic on points over twelve rounds. Aunanimous points win gave Watanabe his second successful defence. Despite a cut to his eye in the third round, the 30 year old champion landed the more powerful blows. Solano was making his first bid for a world title at the age of 29. Watanabe took the title in Osaka last July by beating Payao Pooltarat of Thailand. Four months later he retained by knocking out the same fighter in the 11th round of a contest held in Kumamoto, Japan. Currently the only Japanese to hold a world title, Watanabe has won all but one of his 25 professional fights.
