I started to video my hikes because I am a digital filmmaker and YouTube director. Also as I live in Denver, Colorado and I have the opportunity to have the mountains so close. I love to videotape in the outdoors because there are no people. A tree or mountain will stand there endlessly waiting you / me to video them. Photographing nature has always be too easy, the universe made the flowers so how could they not be but beautiful. With so many subjects to video I decided to stay with something that I know and love, the outdoors. Walking, hiking, backpacking, cycling on the bike path or on a mountain path, walking the dogs at the park, camping out, sitting in the back yard and just staring into space, just about anything outside is just better. No TV might be the best thing about being outside. I also do the hiking videos because I get comments from viewers that say that they live somewhere where there is little opportunity to hike and that they watch my hiking videos because they cannot do it themselves. As you can see in the videos I mostly hike alone and yep I know that that is sometimes not the best way to hike and bike. When hiking I always try to plan for the worst and that is because I have anxiety with being, sometimes, so far from help if I need it. So the best way to fight that anxiety is by being prepared. Water and warmth are my major concerns. I use a Camelbak D2 Fit water backpack because I can carry a lot of water and gear. It is lightweight and even I cannot seem to destroy it as I do most of my gear. I carry a basic map of the area as well as and Suunto M-2D Locator Compass. My Timex Adventure Tech Digital Compass Watch also has a compass as a back-up. I do leave a note at the house, which is basically a copy of what I carry so that if I don't come back at night at least my partner will know where I went that day. I dress in several layers because I can just hang the clothes I do not need off my pack. I might take a sweatshirt off going uphill and put it back on going down hill. I always try not to get too sweaty because of two main reasons, 1 is that it can be hard to dry out, then if it gets cold you can get a chill and that can be bad if you are stuck under some trees trying not to get struck by lighting. 2, sweating too much sometimes means you are working too hard, relax this is suppose to be fun remember. I always carry a Outdoor Products Multi-Purpose Poncho; it is one of my several layers. It acts as a raincoat, windscreen and mini tent as needed. Gloves also come along on every hike; I use my long fingered cycling gloves to keep my hands warm for example Mountain Hardwear Momentum Running Gloves. Also gloves are good for bush whacking treks where you have to move sharp or stinging things out of the way. Shoes, because I love shoes and boots I have several and pick the pair I think will be best for a hike. I usually go with a light shoe or boot rather than the big clunky alpine boots. I like the Keen Targhee II Mid Hiking Boots. If the trail is rocky you want a boot but if you are walking a path try a pair of nice light hiking shoes. Hats, while I do not like hats, I always carry one and it too is part of my clothing layers plan. You can always just pull it down over your eyes as you take an afternoon nap on a mountain you just bagged. But the head can cast off a lot of warmth that later in the evening you may want to hang on to. It also helps keep the rain poncho positioned well on your head. And while it may be a little over kill on a day hike if I am going to go on an all day hike where I might run low on water, I carry a mini water filter like the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter. If you get low on water you can just stop at even a trickle of a stream and fill up.
