A subset of lysosomal storage diseases can now be treated, and early detection in newborns is key to a successful treatment outcome. Described in this talk is a new technology based on tandem mass spectrometry for newborn screening of several lysosomal storage diseases. Pilot studies of the technology shows that it is appropriate for population-based newborn screening. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. List three key advantages of using tandem mass spectrometry for newborn screening of inborn errors. 2. Describe the key advantage of using tandem mass spectrometry for post-screening diagnosis/prognosis studies. 3. Cite at least three reasons to include a new disease in a newborn screening panel.
