Many racists tend to commonly give credence to the idea that their tax dollars are allowing minorities a “free ride”: having no job, a wealth of food stamps, while utilizing “free money” to support drug usage and shopping expeditions. However, these same individuals are so consumed by this stereotypical myth, that they either ignore or are actually oblivious to the welfare census and who truly uses and abuses the system.
In fact, most of the information circulating about welfare abuse is not based in fact at all. And when one takes a look at the data regarding welfare, they will see that it is, in fact, not primarily used or abused by blacks, and that most “information” on the subject is simply racism disguised as economic or political concern.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, over 40 percent of food stamp recipients are white, only 25.7 percent are African-American, 10.3 percent are Hispanic, 2.1 percent are Asian, and 1.2 percent are Native American. Also, despite the racist and false rhetoric that Donald Trump and his supporters spew, illegal immigrants’ utilization of government subsidies are not as pertinent as they claim either.

In 2015, SNAP provided benefits to 46.5 million people–76% being white–costing the program a total of $74.2 billion. What’s more, it is utterly impossible for recipients to have gone on the “drug binges” and “shopping sprees,” as one might believe, with the $257 average monthly SNAP benefit across all participating households that was issued. As a matter of fact, approximately 84% of SNAP households lived in poverty. Furthermore, contrary to the popular belief that most welfare recipients are lazy, irresponsible, jobless leeches, 52 percent of single households that receive SNAP benefits have earned income. Many SNAP participants without disabilities are required to register for work or be registered by the State agency, must participate in a State employment and training or workfare program if assigned by the State agency, and must agree to accept any suitable job offered to them.

Although most welfare recipients are hardworking individuals in need of extra assistance to make ends meet, there are those who abuse the system, making it difficult for actual needy households to receive benefits. In addition to welfare fraud, federal programs improper allocation of funds also causes a major deficit in the welfare system. In fiscal year 2015, most of the federal improper payment estimate was a result of the Medicare, Medicaid, and Earned Income Tax Credit programs, which account for over half of the government-wide improper payment estimate.

Although a large percentage of welfare discrepancy is a result of federal errors, people tend to believe that it is actually foodstamp fraud, when in fact, data shows that there is only 1 percent of foodstamp trafficking in this country. Furthermore, contrary to the popular belief that welfare benefits are depleting the integrity of the economy, economists consider SNAP one of the most effective forms of economic stimulus. Moody’s Analytics estimates that in a weak economy, every dollar increase in SNAP benefits generates about $1.70 in economic activity.

Common Forms of Welfare Fraud:

    Trafficking foodstamps (selling for cash)
Reporting that a parent is not residing at a house when they actually are
False claims by a parent or childcare provider in order to commit disability fraud
Failure to report drug related convictions when applying for welfare benefits
Not reporting a felony arrest or arrest warrant when applying for welfare benefits
Failure to adhere to probation terms while receiving welfare benefits
    Purposely not reporting income/employment
    Not disclosing personal assets
Not disclosing other assistant programs currently being utilized (i.e. section 8, unemployment benefits, social security, etc.)

Another common notion is that blacks utilize more Section 8 vouchers or certificates than any other race. However, the facts are quite the opposite. Simply put, those who believe that people of color are the main recipients of welfare, food stamps, benefits etc.. are wrong; the numbers show quite the opposite. And logically so. Claiming that minority families only use welfare to help lavish a “freeloading” lifestyle is unadulterated racism, and is not rooted in fact of any kind. Able-bodied adults with or without children have enough trouble as it is receiving any kind of welfare benefits for their families, and those facing unemployment are experiencing even more difficulty trying to provide for themselves and their dependents.

Families on welfare should not be considered criminals; these benefits are often barely enough to help them get through tough times and find new opportunities for themselves and their loved ones. And although few do find
