In 2016, 250 million international migrants sent almost half a trillion US dollars back to their communities in developing countries, 40 per cent of which – around $200 billion – reached rural areas where poverty runs deepest. Today, one in ten people in the world are involved in sending or receiving remittances, which provide a crucial lifeline for families in difficult situations and in fragile contexts.
