The winter storm is ramping up and some areas are already feeling the impact. The roads are in good shape, but we have still had several accidents this morning. In Henderson County, residents are already seeing a bit of snow on and off. The snowy mix was the cause of several wrecks this morning, all of which the highway patrol say were minor. The area began seeing snow early Tuesday morning, and while some appears to be sticking to the ground, the main roads are mostly clear. That does not mean they're not slick. DOT says they're really waiting for a break in this right now so they can get out and hit the roads with salt to get them ready for the big snow dump. The western counties have contracted 14 motto graders to help out the state crews. Right now the DOT is also just getting snow equipment ready, sharpening chainsaws, making sure trucks are ready to be rolled out. Sally Laporta, Hendersonville, "they don't get here plowing until after it's over, so it just gets real slick on this hill right here so we don't get out unless we go the other way." Some families are already in hibernation mode for this storm, and that's the hope, that people will not be on the roads. A lot of those secondaries might be in tough shape starting today, as DOT says their biggest focus is going to be the interstates. In Buncombe County, it's a waiting game. Road crews on standby and school officials are focusing on the forecast. Main roads like Interstate 240 are clear this afternoon, and have been all morning long. Secondary roads are mostly clear, with a few slick spots, including ice. It was enough of a threat to put Buncombe County schools on a two hour delay, with some other counties in our region, canceling classes. DOT treated the roads yesterday, and have been responding to calls, salting any icy spots on area roads today. They're preparing now for round two of this winter storm. Justin Rice, Buncombe County Maintenance Engineer, "right now we are getting ready send our salt brine trucks out spray salt brine on our interstate and primary routes which is just a pre-treatment before the snow event comes in." DOT says they have extra crews on standby if needed, they're preparing for 4-8 inches on county roads. The Highway Patrol says there have been a few weather related accidents today, but nothing major. In in Greenville snow has been falling since about 5:30am this morning, today at noon it started to stick.
