The German government has named 2009 the year of science and research. But while politicians are quick to stress the importance of higher education, students say their words are often are not supported by deeds. Many of Germany’s universities are in dire financial straits. Christian Stecker, a doctoral candidate in politics at the University of Potsdam, says he faces a constant balancing act between teaching and learning. He says the libraries are insufficiently stocked for his research. And too much of his time is spent organising seminars, for little pay. We take a look at the obstacles facing Germany’s students.
