In this video I talk about two ways to treat your clothing with permethrin, an insecticide that is highly effective against flying insects, ticks, and other insects that are a nuisance for hikers. First, I go over common insect repellents and their general effectiveness against flying insects and ticks. Then I talk about permethrin, an insecticide that is increasingly being used in the outdoor clothing industry. You can treat your clothing and gear at home with permethrin products which are effective for only a few washing cycles. I show how to soak small items in bags, which is a more effective and cost efficient method to treat clothing at home. Then I wrap it up by endorsing Insect Shield, a company which has a proprietary method to treat clothing so permethrin persists for up to 70 washings. I highly recommend buying clothing pre-treated by Insect Shield, or sending your clothing to the company. The link below is how to mail your clothing. None of these companies have paid me for an endorsement or sent me free clothing items. Insect Shield your own clothes https://www.insectshield.com/ISYOC.aspx
