Shorakapok: Renaming a Manhattan Forest. (BY NAMING SOMETHING, WE TAKE POSSESSION OF IT; BY LOOSING THAT NAME; WE LOOSE POSSESSION OF IT.) This documentary chronicles the efforts of the Native American Heritage Committee to get the forest area in Inwood Hill Park at the northern end of Manhattan renamed "Shorakapok," the name given it by the original Indians who lived on Manhattan Island. It is the last remaining native forest in Manhattan. There is footage of the signing ceremony at City Hall in September 1992, with Mayor David Dinkins and City Councilman Stanley E. Michels, as well as footage from the Inwood Hill Native American Festival, held on September 19, 1992. Speakers at the festival include members of the Lenape/Delaware tribes that used to live in Manhattan, including James Lone Bear Revey and Chief Richard Snake. Local politicians who speak include City Councilman Stanley Michels, Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger, and City Councilman Guillermo Linares. Members of the Native American Heritage Committee featured in the piece include Martha Kreipe de Montano, Lloyd Oxendine, Rodger Parsons, Bobby Gonzalez, and Stephanie Betancourt. The piece was photographed and edited by Brian Camp. The version presented here, the only remaining copy, was an unfinished edit, lacking opening and closing credits and identifications of speakers.
