A suicide bomber entered a guarded side street in the main diplomatic neighborhood of Kabul early on Wednesday and detonated his vest when Afghan security guards demanded his identification. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which happened at 8:20am local time killing two security guards and injuring five civilians, according to authorities. Afghan police said the bomber was accompanied by another man. Both men were wearing private security uniforms and explosive vests. They were stopped at a checkpoint and asked to show identification by two guards. When the two refused, the guards raised their weapons to shoot. The guards fired before the attackers reached them. It is unclear if the shooting set off the bomb or the bomber detonated his vest. The explosion blew a hole in the perimeter wall. The street where the attack took place is within blocks of the American Embassy.
