After the Berg family narrowly escaped a raid during Kristallnacht, they decided to flee Germany and go to Kenya. They packed up their belongings in steamer trunks and set sail on the SS Usambara. Susan Snyder, Curator, describes their story of survival. Read about the daughters of the Berg family, who donated the trunk to the Museum: http://www.ushmm.org/remembrance/survivoraffairs/meet/detail.php?content=pauly-j; and http://www.ushmm.org/remembrance/survivoraffairs/meet/detail.php?content=katzenstein-i.
