The uptight Aubrey is the head of the bunch who lost last year's finals by losing her lunch. The much nicer Chloe is Aubrey's sidekick who has her own troubles with being sick. They're ready to sing, dance, and compete but first they're gonna have to get some fresh meat. So they put together a random selection of girls far from accaperfection. There's Lilly, the girl who speaks really low but what she's saying you don't want to know. There's Cynthia Rose, who's sexually ambiguous and seems to like Stacie who's openly promiscuous. There's Fat Amy, the wacky zany one whose humor is sometimes forced but gets the job done. But that's just the 2-dimensional secondary cast The true star is Beca, the social outcast. Beca wants to be a DJ and not to go to school but her dad won't let her leave cuz he's a teaching tool. But if she joins a club and still wants to split he'll stop controlling her life and finally let her quit. So of course Beca will have to become a Bella, but she doesn't think she can sing accapella. But Chloe thinks that Beca can totally make it after seeing her sing in the shower completely naked. But Aubrey's worried not 'cause of the way that she sings but 'cause she wears all those alternative earrings. But in the audition Beca sings really well and does this thing with a cup that's super cool as hell. So she gets into the group and becomes their savior by shaking up the team with her alternative behavior. But the movie follows a pretty typical path and Beca can't change things due to Aubrey's wrath. And then things get all romantically messy when Beca gets involved with the Treble Maker Jesse. The Treble Makers are another accapella group who won last year's finals in one fell swoop. But sadly the movie fails when it comes to the drama it feels poorly inserted like an unneeded comma, making characters unreasonably act like dicks just so the movie can have conflicts. Now Beca and Jesse's arc is incredibly cute but the badly written fallout nearly renders it moot. But the Breakfast Club redeems them from being total jerks in a rare emotional thread that actually works. The movie's not the best at developing characters or plot but that doesn't mean the movie's bad, it's not. The music is catchy and really nicely done and the movie's not without it's share of fun. Despite their lack of depth, the characters are funny like the douchebaggy Bumper who betrays his group for money or the really nerdy Benji, Jesse's magical roommate. And the weirdly offensive commentators? They're great! Yes, the movie can be fun but the edges are rough. It's pretty much just time-killing fluff. So all in all at the end of the day Pitch Perfect is just pitch okay. Not good enough to go see today, but good enough to rent on Blu-Ray. Now vote for my next movie review!
