(11 Nov 2018) Romans on Sunday voted in a non-binding referendum on the future of the public transport services in the Italian capital. The debt-ridden ATAC company, owned by the municipality, has been heavily criticised for delays, a limited service, and old and poorly maintained buses, some of which have even caught fire. The referendum was organised by the Italian Radical party and other groups. By choosing Yes, citizens vote for a tender to allow public and private companies to compete for the transport services. Supporters of the referendum have argued that a tender would allow for more competitive companies to manage transport services and that this would allow the municipality to better supervise services. Critics have said some bus lines are already owned by private companies and they have not been more effective than ATAC. They have also blamed ATAC's failures on budget cuts, saying increased funding is the solution for Rome's transport woes.
