Mary Poppins wouldn't be the same without her iconic flying umbrella. Who was the real Mary Poppins and did PL Travers invent the flying umbrella concept or had it exist years before? See early vintage umbrella postcards that feature flying umbrellas and many other symbols that shape our popular culture. Whether it's Charlie Chaplin's mustache, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, Thomas Edison's light bulb, ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, coats of arms or pub signs; symbols are everywhere. They seep into our collective subconsciousness, subtly moulding our attitudes, ideas and desires. We're often guilty of crediting famous celebrities with inventing concepts and starting trends, even though they were often instigated by lesser known but equally visionary people years before.
