The special qualities of the Messenger (PBUH) that (1) his eyes slept but his heart did not, and that (2) he fasted several days continuously (without breaking it even between sunset and the following dawn), known as Wisal. It was narrated by al-Bukhaari (698) and Muslim (763) from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I slept in the house of Maymoonah and the Prophet (PBUH) was with her that night. He did wudu then he stood to pray, and I stood on his left, but he took hold of me and moved me to his right. Then he prayed thirteen rak’ahs, then he slept until he was breathing deeply, for when he slept he used to breathe deeply. Then the mu'adhin came to him and he went out and prayed, and he did not do wudu. The Prophet (PBUH) slept, and he got up to pray and did not do wudu. The scholars stated that this ruling (that wudu is not invalidated by sleeping) applies only to the Messenger (PBUH), because the eyes of the Prophet (PBUH) used to sleep but his heart did not, so if he had broken his wudu he would have been aware of it. Al-Nawawi said: The words “then he lay down and slept until he was breathing deeply, then he got up and prayed and did not do wudu” refer to something that applied only to the Prophet (PBUH), namely that if he slept lying down, that did not invalidate his wudu, because his eyes slept but his heart did not, so if he had broken his wudu he would have been aware of it, unlike other people. Al-Haafiz said: The words “he prayed and did not do wudu” – the eyes of the Prophet (PBUH) slept but his heart did not, so if he had broken his wudu he would have been aware of it. Hence sometimes he did wudu when he got up from sleep, and sometimes he did not. Al-Khattaabi said: His heart was prevented from sleeping so that he would be aware of the Wahy (Revelation) if it came whilst he was sleeping. Al-Bukhaari (3569) narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “My eyes sleep, but my heart does not.” It was also narrated by Ahmad (7369) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Maajah (474) narrated that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would fall asleep until he was breathing deeply, then he would get up and pray, and he did not do wudu. Al-Bukhari: Volume 3, Book 31, Number 145: Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet fasted for days continuously; the people also did the same but it was difficult for them. So, the Prophet forbade them (to fast continuously for more than one day). They said, "But you fast without break (no food was taken in the evening or in the morning)." The Prophet replied, "I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (by Allah)." Muslim: Book 35, Number 2435: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade them (his Companions) to observe Sawm Wisal out of mercy for them. They said: You (Holy Prophet) yourself observe it. Upon this he said: I am not like you. My Lord feeds me and provides me drink.
