Captain Kirk sets the Enterprise to self-destruct that catches the Klingons by surprise.

It is too late when Commander Kruge realizes what exactly is going on on the Enterprise's bridge.  The Enterprise's self-destruction proceeds to give the Klingons a royal beating with a singular attack that destroys the main saucer.
