The superhero gathering that comic book fans have been dreaming of for years is reportedly one step closer to happening, because it’s been alleged that 20th Century Fox are considering a deal with Marvel Studios to pair up some of their characters.

This speculation began after Matt Key, who is a producer on Kevin Smith’s Fatman On Batman podcast, told Collider Heroes, “I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have … kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe …’”

But before you start dreaming up the kind of scenarios that Professor X, Magneto, Wolverine Mr Fantastic, The Thing, Deadpool, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Thor could get up to on the big-screen, it doesn’t sound like it will happen for quite a while.

“We’re years away from that ever possibly happening,” Matt Key added, “But I think that’s what it would take … Fox joining hands with Marvel.”

Spider-Man’s debut in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ has led to fevered hope that Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox can figure out a deal that will see either the ‘X-Men’ and/or ‘The Fantastic Four’, franchises that are owned by Fox, follow Peter Parker and join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Obviously the big hope for movie fans is that members of the ‘X-Men’ posse will now appear in the MCU. But even though ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ was met with mediocre reviews and made just $523 million - over $200 million less than its predecessor ‘Days Of Future Past’ – it’s highly unlikely that Fox would want Marvel to have contact with a series that has amassed over $4.3 billion for the studio.

The same can also be said for ‘Deadpool’, which amassed $778.6 million, was a critical darling, and has already made its titular character a pop culture icon.

What’s more likely is that Fox will allow Marvel Studios to bring ‘The Fantastic Four’ into their Cinematic Universe, as each of their attempts to do so have been met with a mediocre response, most recently in 2015 when Josh Trank’s maligned reboot was met with a woeful critical response and took in just $168 million.
