Greetings! Eric Bakker, New Zealand naturopath. Author of Candida Crusher, formulator of the CanXida range of dietary supplements. Thanks for checking me out again. Question from a guy called David Hosking from Los Angeles. David's asking: "Eric, is it dangerous-is a gallon of drinking water a day too much over even dangerous?" He's asking here. A gallon of drinking water? What the hell do you want to drink a gallon drinking water for? That's a lot.

If we look at it from-an American gallon is 3.78 liters of water. An imperial like the English one, I think that's about 4.5, nearly 4.6 liters of water. So that's three liters and 750-780 mils. That's a hell of a lot of water. Who on earth is wanting to drink a gallon of water a day? Why would you want that for? That's crazy. If you're going to eat a diet that's quite high in vegetables and fruits and have some herbal teas, you're not going to really need like a gallon of water. That's just insane.

People take things too far. We're often told we need eight glasses of water a day. I don't know anybody who drinks eight glasses of water a day. I don't know where all these stupid rules came from that you have to do this and you must do that. People drink when they're thirsty and they don't drink when they're not thirsty. Simple as that. Many people drink a cup of coffee or a few cups of tea per day. There are many ways to get fluid into your body. I do believe it's important though to drink when you get up. That's' a really key time to drink one or two glasses of water. Maybe in the afternoon again you might want to drink some more. If you're going to drink regular beverages throughout the day and hopefully they're not soda drinks or seven or eight cups of coffee a day, you're going to get adequate fluid into your body. And in doubt, check your pee. Look at the urine flow. It should be reasonably clear and not like strong smelling.

Many people carry a water bottle around with them I've noticed. You can do it that way. But if you're going to be talking about a gallon a day, you're going to be talking about an awful lot of water bottles you're going to be carrying around all day. I don't think anybody really needs to drink a gallon of water per day. I think that's a little bit over the top, David. It's not as if you're leaking water somewhere and you need to keep topping it up.

Depending on your perspiration. I know some people who do a lot of sauna therapy that would drink two or three liters a day. If you're going to perspire heavily, you'll have a high need for water. If you're going to live in a very cold climate, you're going to have a lesser need for water. So a lot of it also depends on your metabolism. How much you sweat/how much you work and how much you don't work.

I think that's a myth in my opinion, drinking massive amounts of water per day to improve your health. I really don't think it's going to give you an advantage over people drinking a little bit less. Drink when you're thirsty.
