We have had 4 total bald eagles come through our hands in the last 16 years from gunshots to heavy parasitism. We have only had 2 leave the hospital in one piece. This is one of those cases.
This patient was presented from a ground capture, lateral recumbency, dehydrated, weak, and anemic. As you can see his treatment was labor intensive but we got him stable enough to be transferred for rehab and strengthening. Once we got him to a cage that enabled us to assess his feet and ambulation. At that time we knew it would take a miracle to release him into the wild because of the damage to his leg and foot. It seems that our juvenile had been on the ground for some time and even injured for longer than predicted. The chronicity of that injury left him destined for heaven. This case broke our hearts but once again we fought the good fight and another animal went into the light feeling a love and compassion few of his species will ever know.
