DAILY DOSE | There are rumors that there's a small faction inside Israel's LAbor party looking to break off and form a new party — a practice seen often in Israeli politics. Is it true and how would it affect the Labor's election bid? LAbor Chairman Hilik Bar discusses with our Mike Wagenheim. Story: Israel’s 20th session of parliament was set to come to a close on Wednesday as lawmakers vote on a bill dissolving the Knesset and setting early elections for April. Government ministers were expected to fast-track a bill setting the move in motion through all three required plenary readings on Wednesday, in an effort to officially disperse the Knesset by day’s end and kick off the 2019 election campaign ahead of April 9th polls. The accelerated process, reserved only for emergency measures, required the passing of a motion earlier on Wednesday allowing the waiver of a six-week waiting period that regular legislation is normally subject to. The bill plainly states that the 20th Knesset will “dissolve itself ahead of elections” setting forth the date for polls — agreed upon by both the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition and opposition parties — as April 9, 2019. The first reading and vote on the dissolution bill was expected at 11:00 a.m. local time, but was held up by nearly an hour by Netanyahu loyalist and head of the House Committee Miki Zohar who on Tuesday threatened to use his position to delay the dissolution of parliament in order to give lawmakers time to push through pending legislation. He referred specifically to his own proposed legislation limiting access to online pornography, and another proposal by Likud MK Amir Ohana easing access to the Israeli bar exam. 'This meeting will not end, and no bills will be added to it as long as the bill to dissolve the Knesset is not brought to a final vote,' Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein vowed Wednesday, as Zohar appeared to retreat. Netanyahu was left with a razor-thin 61 seat majority in Israel's 120 seat parliament following Avigdor Liberman's resignation as defense minister last month over his staunch opposition to a controversial Gaza ceasefire deal. At the time, Netanyahu worked to rescue the coalition and managed to keep it on track for several more weeks arguing that calling early elections then would have been irresponsible due to the sensitive security situation facing the country. But the decision to call it quits came Monday after it became apparent that the coalition would not be able to overcome an impasse on a contentious bill regulating military conscription for ultra-Orthodox Jews — a key piece of legislation that has repeatedly threatened to tank the government.
