German V-1 "Buzz Bombs" were the first long distance guided missiles used in modern warfare. Though inaccurate and fairly slow, after their introduction in 1943 they still manged to kill thousand of civilians and as such, were effective "terror weapons." Radar guided anti-aircraft guns and high speed fighters based in Britain soon took a heavy toll, but too V-1s still to got through. V-1 bases in Northern France were regularly targeted by Allied bombers, but, as you'll see in this film, the Germans became expert at camouflaging launch sites. So, there was an continuing outcry in Parliament for their destruction. That made the the capture and destruction of V-1 bases sites along the English Channel a top strategic priority in Allied war plans, so much so that it factored in the decision to favor Montgomery's advance along the coast with scarce supplies, rather than Patton's advance in the interior of France.
