Sometime honey bees build external hives and the reason I think they do it is because they swarmed and could not find anywhere else to start a hive. The honey bees could not find a hollow tree or any other place to start a hive. External hives like this one most likely will not survive because of it being exposed to the elements. External hives like this one are not common by they do happen sometimes. This external honey bee colony looks to be queenless and will have to be combined with another one of my hive.
