The Prime Minister and the French President made a poignant visit to the Thiepval memorial in northern France this afternoon, where they took part in a wreath-laying ceremony ahead of Sunday’s 100th anniversay of Armistice Day. The memorial (pictured), which honours more than 72,000 men of British and South African forces who died in the Somme, is close to the town of Albert, where Mr Macron's great-grandfather George Robertson (inset), from Bristol, fought for Britain in the trenches. He was 19 during the Somme campaign, and won medals for his service before staying on in France after the war. A wreath combining poppies and le bleuet, the two national emblems of remembrance for Britain and France, was made for the occasion at the memorial, which holds an annual commemoration for the Missing of the Somme. Earlier the pair had enjoyed a working lunch together, with Mrs May having joined the French leader fresh from a visit to St Symphorien Military Cemetery just outside Mons, where she praised fallen troops who fought in the war for being 'staunch to the end against odds uncounted'.
