The Effectiveness of Protests

I would really like your opinions on this one guys. Just about all of you who like to respond are smart, insightful people, so your thoughts on this are appreciated. Basically, I feel that in these days and times, protests aren't that effective anymore. They may have been in the past, but they just seem to be a way for the government to easily lock up dissidents now.
