As the Howrah WAP4 hauled 12273 Howrah New Delhi Duronto Express nears Dhanbad, it encounters its first glimpses of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The soil is red, rich with iron-ore, the paddy fields suddenly have disappeared and have been replaced by an arid landscape, dotted with small hills in the horizon. The land is no longer flat but filled with undulations and finally, the sal trees start to become ubiquitous. In the midst of all this, the Howrah New Delhi Duronto express negotiates the huge curve at Pradhan Khanta and speeds towards Dhanbad for its first technical halt.
