The second weekend of September saw the final workings of a Mid Hants Railway stalwart, LMS Black 5 No.45379. Having returned to service almost eight years previous, following restoration from scrap condition, she would work her final train on Sunday 9th September, before being withdrawn, pending a heavy overhaul. I visited on the Saturday, her penultimate day in service, which also featured BR Class 47 No.47579 'James Nightall GC' working on the day's services. Our first shot sees 45379 in a typical scene from the last eight years, her working away up the 1 in 80 gradient from Ropley, at Bowers Grove Lane. We then move over to Ropley itself, on Bighton Hill road bridge, where we see 45379 rolling down into the station to cross with 47579. After the road has been set and the signals pulled off, 47579 makes her move away from Ropley to begin the ascent to Medstead & Four Marks, where we next see her. After a brief pause, she is on her way again, towards the last stop at Alton. Our final shot comes from Sun lane Bridge at Alresford where, not only is this the last shot of the video, but it is also my actual last shot of 45379 before she goes out of service. It was pretty typical noisy departure from the 5, which is all I could ever ask for. Farewell, old girl.
