The Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats had almost agreed on changes to the inheritance tax system, when the CDU's Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, intervened and demanded less tax on family-owned firms being passed from one generation to the next. We visited a prosperous town in Erding, where there is a lot to inherit. And just down the road is Austria, which recently scrapped inheritance tax altogether.
