A major crime ring is using technology to steal credit card numbers of local Bojangles customers. Along with the victims, it is often the financial institutions that end up paying the price. In October and November, Waynesville police say hundreds of customers had their cards hacked. It happened at Bojangles restaurants in Waynesville, Asheville, and Hendersonville. They say thieves used high tech malware to electronically lift their card information and eventually make cloned cards to steal money. Once the victim reports the loss, one local credit union says the money is refunded, and it's the credit union that pays the cost. Probably just in the last month, it's been over $5,000 that we have refunded to our members that have been affected by this, said Patty Idol, CEO of Waynesvilles Mountain Credit Union. We were getting probably 4-5 requests to put credit back into our members' accounts for fraudulent transactions. They've been affected but of course we refund everything to our members. So actually it's the credit union that looses. It really just comes off the bottom line. Bojangles says it took steps weeks ago to review and secure its systems and it wants customers to know it's now safe to use credit cards.
