Brexit - Just One Percent Chance EU Will Talk Trade

A leaked memo from the Special Envoy from the City of London to the European Union says that the EU could well put politics ahead of economics in its Brexit negotiations.

In a 1,200 word memo to about 350 financial firm executives, a memo from the City Envoy to the EU, Jeremy Browne, says that the voice of business will not hold sway over the politicians.

Mr Browne who has previously called the EU approach to the negotiations as bewildering and reckless, also pointed out how much the large European corporations support the EU and protecting the single market.

The memo, which was leaked to the Daily Telegraph, also says that there is just a one percent chance of the EU agreeing to start discussions on a future EU/UK relationship in October. November is the new October he said.

“It was stated again that the voice of businesses in the EU will not sway the political decision makers,” he stated in the memo. “The big German corporates, for example, will not issue tough warnings to their politicians.

“It is, I think, underestimated in Britain how deeply corporate Europe buys into the EU orthodoxy. They are not boat-rockers by nature, but they also attach great importance to protecting the integrity of the Single Market, and going further still, to deepening Eurozone integration.

“Trade with Britain is, of course, significant, but there is little obvious sign of ranks being broken.”

This leaked memo by the former Liberal Democrat MP Home office minister shows just how much the large corporations love the EU.

So many Remainers are of the mind set that it is the Leave campaign that is backed by these corporations with claims that it is only the EU that is protecting the down-trodden worker from the worst excesses of heartless bosses.

But this memo shows how untrue that is.

These big companies know exactly who is protecting them from external competition by trade barriers, from internal competition with excessive red tape and from a lack of low skilled cheap workers by keeping the borders open.

And to all those who think that this proves we must be weak and cave in so as to stay in the single market, I say no it doesn’t. For me it just shows they are hoping to keep their club together, punish us in the UK with a huge bill and then still sell us all their goods tariff free.

If that’s what they’re hoping for then they’ll have a very long wait.
