Public Comments Welcome at City Budget Discussio

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Tuesday, the public has the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed 154-million-dollar budget for the City of Asheville. Among the changes to this year's budget, a pay increase could be on the horizon for city staff. A one-percent raise for all city employees is being considered. The public safety fund could also see a $1-million increase in this year's budget. Also, a property tax increase of almost two cents is being discussed, meaning residents would now pay about 48-cents for every $100 of property value. This comes after state legislation passed last year, cut business license fees. This cost Asheville $1.5-million. The purpose of the property tax increase would be to make up that loss. The city says the property tax is it's single largest source of revenue. City Council has until June 23rd to adopt a budget.
