Nativity sculpture from 700 tons of sand delivered to St Peter's Square

(17 Nov 2018) Everything is ready in St. Peter's Square for the creation of the Vatican's first sand nativity scene, which will be the centerpiece of the Christmas decorations, along with a giant tree. About 700 tons of sand from the beach of Jesolo, near Venice, have been shipped on Wednesday to St. Peter's Square for the sculpture, which will be made by an international set of artists. Blocks of pressed sand were made from it and three sculptors from Russia, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic and an artistic director from the US have been asked to turn them into figures. The completed scene is scheduled to be unveiled December 7, when the Christmas tree lights will be turned on. In January after the Christmas season, the nativity scene will be broken down, but the sand will not be returned to Venetian beach. The council still has to decide with the Vatican what will happen to it. The Vatican is known for displaying larger-than-life-sized Nativity scenes that attract thousands of tourists.
