Transgender woman Sophia Reis was left ‘humiliated and embarrassed’ when her Santander bank account was frozen after the phone banking system was unable to identify her voice correctly. The 47-year-old from Nottingham is now battling with the bank to ensure that other transgender people don’t receive the same treatment. Miss Reis said she had informed the bank last November that she would no longer be named Sergio on the account, despite this, when she tried to transfer money to a friend, the system locked her out as she ‘sounded like a man’. Santander has apologised to Miss Reis and has said it ‘wasn’t their intention to cause offence’.
