Finance Minister Presents Budget Today

Attention will be turned to the Parliament on Monday afternoon as the Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, presents the 2018-2019 Budget. This will be Minister Imbert's fourth Budget. One of the key matters expected to be highlighted in this year's budget will be the impact the closure of Petrotrin is likely to have on the price of fuel, and the likely cost to the taxpayer to restructure the State Company. Last year, Minister Imbert had presented a $50 billion budget which was revised downwards to $49 billion. The sitting of the House of Representatives begins at 1:30pm. Meanwhile, Finance Secretary at the Tobago House of Assembly, Joel Jack, is expecting Tobago to be treated fairly, consistent with what the island has been given since 2015, when the 2018-2019 Budget is presented. Mr. Jack said the Assembly has requested around $5 billion, but as it relates to tourism, he said he expects the Minister to outline two game changers for the island. One of those is the Sandals project. He also wants to hear the Minister’s statements, if any, on the Crown Point Airport.
