Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has been in a long-running battle with the Treasury for more cash for Britain's Armed Forces. And dozens of Tory MPs had issued dark warnings that they could rebel against today's Budget unless extra funding was found. The clamour for more cash for the Ministry of Defence came after a damning report exposed a £20bn blackhole in the department's finances over the next decade. Mr Hammond has come under to find the extra money after a major report by the National Audit Office (NAO) warned of the huge shortfall in the MoD's funding plan. In a swipe at Labour, Mr Hammond told the Commons today: 'On this side of the House we are proud of our Armed Forces.'
